Job Description

Direct Counsel is representing a mission-driven public law firm seeking a Land Use & Government Advice Attorney with 6-10 years of experience in general municipal law. This role involves advising public agencies across California, with a particular focus on land use, housing, and CEQA matters. The ideal candidate will be passionate about public service, comfortable working with a diverse range of clients, and experienced in delivering strategic legal counsel to local governments and nonprofits.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Serve as principal legal contact for a range of public agency and nonprofit clients
  • Provide guidance on land use, housing law, CEQA, and general government matters
  • Regularly attend and staff public meetings for cities, counties, and special districts
  • Supervise legal professionals and office staff
  • Support business development efforts and represent the firm at professional events
  • Contribute to mentorship and development of junior attorneys and staff
Qualifications:
  • J.D. and active California Bar membership
  • 6-10 years of relevant legal experience, preferably as lead attorney on municipal matters
  • Strong expertise in CEQA, land use, and housing law
  • Solid understanding of the Brown Act, Public Records Act, and Political Reform Act
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple client matters and respond quickly to client needs
  • Commitment to collaboration and public interest legal work
  • Interest in leadership and mentorship within the firm
Compensation & Benefits:
  • Salary: $220,000 - $250,000 (depending on experience)
